What is the disability reconsideration process in Ohio?

If your initial Social Security Disability claim is denied in Ohio, you have the right to request a reconsideration. This is the first step in the appeals process, allowing the Social Security Administration (SSA) to review your claim again and potentially reverse the denial.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Steps in the Disability Reconsideration Process in Ohio
  • Request Reconsideration: You must file a written request for reconsideration within 60 days of receiving your denial notice.
  • Claim Review: A new disability examiner and medical professional—who were not involved in the first decision—will review your application, medical records, and any additional evidence you provide.
  • Decision: The SSA will notify you of their reconsideration decision, usually within 3 to 5 months. They may approve your claim, deny it again, or request more information.

What to Include in Your Reconsideration Request
  • Any new or updated medical evidence that supports your disability claim.
  • Documentation of ongoing or worsening symptoms.
  • Information about treatments, hospital visits, or new diagnoses since your original application.

What Happens If Your Reconsideration Is Denied?

If your reconsideration request is denied, you can take the next step by requesting a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). This stage often allows for a more detailed review and an opportunity to present your case in person.
